Teng Tools Tarmac Series starts in fine weather

July 6th, 2008

The 2008 Tarmac Series now sponsored by Teng Tools, started in fine conditions at the Wintec Avalon Drive Campus on Sunday 15 June. 56 competitors turned up to pit their skills against the clock. Each had 2 attempts at 4 different tests, and they certainly proved to be a test with many “Wrong Ways” being recorded.
Vehicles covered everything from a 999 cc Daihatsu Charade through to a 4 litre Lexus Soarer, with FWD, RWD and 4WD all being represented. Our youngest competitor was Leigh Mitchell at 13 years old in a Starlet he shared with his father, and we had an over 60 with Colin Cavanagh from Tauranga in his Fiat 125 Special.
At the end of the day 4WD prevailed, unusual in motorkhanas as they often don’t change direction as well as smaller more nimble cars. First was a Subaru WRX driven by Paul Harvie. Second was another 4WD, being a Subaru Legacy, often thought to be a bit big for this type of event. This was skillfully used by Alan Smith, a regular in our series for a number of years now. Third was a more likely Mini driven by Ralph Taylor, a long time Minis Waikato competitor and organiser.
First Fiat was Geoff Johnson in his Fiat 125T. As always Geoff attacked the tests well and came home in 18th place. First Fiat Club Waikato member was Michael Torrey in the ex Chris Teesdale Toyota Corolla, beating Chris by 2 places. Chris was having his first outing in the ex Peter Taylor Holden Barina, a vehicle he won the series in a number of years ago. Our first lady home was Lenare Martin in the Toyota Levin she usually shares with husband Wayne. She came home in 24th, beating home both her boys.
Our first Junior was Zurrin Wiki, although Zurrin will no longer be a Junior by the end of the Series so our first Series Junior was David Middlemiss.
Our next round is the Autocross at the same venue on July 13th. Hope to see lots of you there.
